Pat’s Foods, Florence County
Florence County, in northeast Wisconsin on the Michigan border, was lacking a full-service grocery store since the closure of Haberkorn’s market in 2007. Due to the distance from the nearest grocery store, the federal government had even deemed half of the county a “food desert.” The absence of a convenient place to shop for food was hindering local companies’ hiring efforts.
Open for Business
With the help of a Tax Incremental Financing District created by the county and a $250,000 Community Development Investment Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, the site was able to attract Pat’s Foods, an Upper Peninsula grocery chain, to open in the vacant Haberkorn’s building. The store opened for business in 2014, creating 20 jobs.
