Austin Straubel Commerce District Site Earns State’s Certified In Wisconsin Designation

Land parcel certified as “development-ready” by Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation

MADISON, WI. Sept. 8, 2015 – The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has designated a portion of the Austin Straubel Commerce District (ASCD) in Hobart, Wis., as a Certified In Wisconsin® development-ready site.

The 33.2-acre site, located on the Austin Straubel International Airport property, is the state’s 15th certified site. A Certified In Wisconsin site gives site selectors and business owners confidence knowing that building plans will not be held up by costly delays in permitting and approvals.

“I congratulate Austin Straubel International Airport and Brown County for achieving the Certified In Wisconsin designation for this site,” said Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, who announced the certification at a ceremony on Tuesday. “Business success today hinges on avoiding unnecessary risks. That certainty is exactly what this certified site offers to site selectors and business owners looking to expand their operations here in the Green Bay area.”

“I’m excited by the prospect of attracting new, family-supporting jobs to our community with the designation of this area as a turn-key location for business development,” said State Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna). “As a result of this certification, job creators can rest assured that they can expand or relocate their business here in the Fox Valley without undue red tape or bureaucracy.”

“The parcels owned by Austin Straubel offer prime locations for many types of businesses looking to locate or expand in Brown County,” said Austin Straubel Airport Director Tom Miller. “With WEDC’s certification, we now have the opportunity to draw more attention to the commercial opportunities available next to one of Wisconsin’s premier transportation hubs.”

The Certified In Wisconsin Program, which was launched by WEDC in 2012, provides potential tenants with all the information needed to make quick decisions about whether that site is right for their needs, such as utility and transportation infrastructure, environmental assessments, quality of labor force and much more. WEDC is utilizing Deloitte Consulting to help evaluate sites that are determined to be ready for development and meet certification requirements. WEDC will market the certified site through its Locate In Wisconsin website,

WEDC sponsors the Certified In Wisconsin Program to enhance the state’s appeal to companies looking to expand operations here. Working with WEDC, communities can obtain site certification for properties at a much lower cost than they would pay to pursue the designation on their own through an independent consultant.

“The Certified In Wisconsin Program serves the dual purpose of providing peace of mind to developers looking for quick turnaround times and demonstrating to companies the multi-faced resources available to help ensure their success in the state,” said Tricia Braun, deputy secretary and chief operation officer of WEDC, the state’s lead economic development agency. “We are proud to work with communities throughout the state to help drive new business development through programs that are responsive to their needs and those of the companies they serve.”

Located adjacent to Austin Straubel International Airport, the ASCD site offers easy commercial and freight air access. The site is also conveniently located relative to I-43, I-41, Hwy. 172, and the Port of Green Bay. The airport and the site are part of a 2,300-acre Free Trade Zone and are also designated as a Historically Underutilized Business Zone by the U.S. Small Business Administration, qualifying businesses that meet certain requirements for exclusive government contracts, accelerated depreciation and other benefits.

“Western Brown County offers tremendous potential for economic development, and today’s announcement is a significant step toward realizing our vision for a thriving business park here at Austin Straubel,” said Troy Streckenbach, Brown County executive. “This site certification allows for our airport assets to be marketed to global enterprises looking to expand in the Midwest. Furthermore, our assets will be among a very short list that is shovel-ready and being marketed by WEDC.”

In addition to the ASCD, the other Certified In Wisconsin sites are located in Westport, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Beaver Dam, Beloit, Chippewa Falls, DeForest, Fitchburg, Village of Howard, Janesville, Menomonie, Prescott, Verona and West Bend. Development is currently underway at the Stevens Point, Beloit, Fitchburg and Prescott locations.
