Custom-Built Transformers for a Reliable Power Supply
Solomon Corp. specializes in sales and service of oil-filled transformers and distribution transformers. Headquartered in Solomon, Kansas, the company conducts business with more than 3,000 utility companies within the U.S. and internationally. The company’s customers include municipalities, rural electric cooperatives and investor-owned utilities, as well as industrial users. Solomon has contracts with some of the largest utilities in the nation, including Xcel Energy, Alliant, WE Energy, Madison Gas and Electric, and Dairyland Power, among others.
Besides Kansas, Solomon has existing operations in Tennessee, Colorado and Texas. The company employs more than 550 people in all, and has annual sales of more than $100 million.
Plugging in to a Well-Connected Location
The company chose Prairie du Chien as the location for its 20,000-square-foot Midwest manufacturing plant. Solomon will invest over $2 million, including equipment, renovation and other costs, into a previously vacant facility in the Northern Gateway Business Park. The company considered multiple locations in the upper Midwest, and ultimately chose Prairie du Chien because of proximity to Solomon’s customer base, access to major transportation and logistics networks, and the availability of skilled workers.
The company has already hired 14 people related to this project, and expects to employ a total of 24 once it is fully operational. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is supporting the project with up to $100,000 in performance-based Business Development Tax Credits. The project also received a zero-interest, 15-year loan for $571,123 from the City of Prairie du Chien.
