MADISON, WI. JULY 19, 2018 – Promega Corp., a global biotechnology company, is relocating some of its manufacturing facilities from California to Madison. The company expects to create 25 new jobs and make a capital investment of $750,000.
“Wisconsin is known as a leader in the biotechnology industry, and we are proud to have a global leader like Promega headquartered in our great state,” said Mark R. Hogan, secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), the state’s leading economic development organization. “I thank Promega for its continued investment and commitment to the state of Wisconsin.”
Promega provides innovative solutions and technical support to life scientists in academic, industrial and government settings. Originally founded in 1978 in Madison, the company is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018. Promega has branches in 16 countries and more than 50 global distributors serving 100 countries.
WEDC is supporting the project by authorizing up to $185,000 in state income tax credits through March 2019. The actual amount of tax credits Promega will receive is contingent upon the number of jobs created during that period.
Promega plans to relocate some of its instrument manufacturing so that the manufacturing can be closer to its research and development activities. This relocation will allow the company to develop products more quickly and face fewer challenges transitioning from concept and design to manufacturing and sale. There is a need to continuously develop and evolve product offerings and the relocation of some of the manufacturing facilities will allow Promega to address this cycle more effectively.
Promega also recently announced a $190 million expansion on its new research and development facility on its Fitchburg campus. This 270,000-square-foot building will provide the space necessary to respond to increasingly complex customer requirements and will allow the corporation to add up to 100 jobs over the next five years.
The Madison office manufactures enzymes and enzyme systems for the amplification and cloning of DNA, detection of gene expression, cell health or biochemical assays and protein analysis. As the corporate headquarters, the Madison office also provides most of the quality assurance testing and technical support for products manufactured by other Promega facilities. In addition to research and development and manufacturing, the Madison campus also is home to marketing, customer service, legal and human resources functions.
