It’s no secret Wisconsin is helping transitioning veterans, but the state is also making a name for itself by supporting military spouses.

For nearly a decade, veterans and their spouses reassigned to Wisconsin for active duty may transfer their job credentials using the reciprocity process. If they are not on active duty anymore but join the Wisconsin National Guard or Reserves, they are also granted the same reciprocity.

This benefit also extends licenses for both service members and their spouses 90-180 days from the date of discharge. Military spouses could benefit from this 3-6-month extension if they were unable to use their license while their partner was on active duty.

Obtaining license reciprocity is an easy process. Military spouses submit an application to the licensing agency and show proof of their spouse’s active duty status.

The military’s requirement for frequent relocations can make it difficult to find employment, but Wisconsin supports and cares for military spouses the same way as service members and veterans.

“As a veteran and military spouse myself, empowering and caring for military spouses in our state is close to my heart,” said Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary-designee Mary Kolar. “Veterans and their entire families play an incredibly important role in the makeup of our state and to each community they live in.”
